‘Tossing the garter’: this cutom has changed somewhat in practice over the centuries but it still remains to this day a custom carried out as part of the evening celebrations. Traditionally the brides garter is removed from her leg by her groom who then would toss it to the single males at the wedding who would be standing in a line with their backs turned. Whosoever catches the garter or it lands on will be thw next to marry and keeps th garter as a trophy. Nowadays brides do like to keep their garter as a keepsake. Therefore it is now tradition to have a ‘garter set’ – one for the bride to keep as her keepsake to hand down as something borrowed and a simpler one for the groom to toss to the single males.
